meaning of "over yonder"

My family moved to the South the summer before my 8th birthday. After settling in to our new home, I experienced a period of acclimation to Southern culture and terminology. While I easily absorbed terms like "y'all" and "fixin' to," the ambiguous term "yonder" never became part of my everyday vocabulary. I have a tendency to be literal in thought and speech, so when friends described the location of things as "over yonder," I was often left confused as to exactly where they meant. Over time, I realized that "yonder" simply meant "not here." And while I still do not use the term other than when singing a certain hymn or while being silly with family and friends, the word has grown on me and has become synonymous with the desire to see as much of the world as possible before my time here is done.

So, if you ask me where I want to travel in the world, I can accurately say, "Over yonder!"
